I'm laughing right now.... you just need to know that before reading this post. I thought about crying, but hey, when life gives you lemons....
This morning I woke up, did the dishes, and then took a shower. A very cold shower. An uncomfortably-cold and therefore quick shower. This should have concerned me more than it did, but I just figured that I had used all of the hot water doing the dishes. Which is stooooopid. Because I had a hard time getting the water warm, let alone hot, when doing the dishes now that I think about it. Oh goodness.
I left the house and headed to Walmart. I don't shop at there often. I get really lost at Walmart. I spent a lot of time there trying to get everything on my list. Which was longer than usual because Irene is visiting later this week. Jokes, I've got them (as my husband would say).
{The earthquake in Virginia already happened at this point and no, I did not feel it. Although, a couple of my friends did. I thought I would share that little fact for my information hungry readers. An earthquake fits into this post just perfectly. Right?}
Anyways, I returned home and put away my groceries, then proceeded to grab some laundry to throw in the washing machine. I ended up not doing laundry today because when I opened the door leading from the kitchen to the garage I found this:
Water spewing from somewhere under my hot water tank to the other side of the garage. Now, I'm deeply afraid of any sort of septic tank problem, which was the first thing that crossed my mind when I discovered this. I mean, the water is light-ish brown. Hahaha. It doesn't smell at all though. I promise. The water has sand in it from under my house.
Without any hesitation I called my rental office. The call went something like this:
Me:"I think there is something wrong with my hot water tank."
Them: "Okay... now I'm not sure if I can get anyone out today, but..."
Me: "Water is going everywhere!"
Them. "Someone will be there within 20 minutes."
I'm feeling pretty relieved at this point. Help is on their way. So I decided to take my trash can to the curb and I discovered that the foundation in the back of my house, near the kitchen and the garage is saturated with water. This freaked me out.
The maintenance guys arrived shortly after that and were surprisingly quick at figuring out the problem. They didn't really try to explain to me what happened, which was annoying, but they were friendly and worked fast. They are coming back tomorrow to fix the holes they created in order to repair the leak:
They said a pipe broke and then they told me, "That isn't supposed to happen." Wow. Really? You learn something new every day. *sarcasm* Then we agreed that it was good that I was only a renting this home. I mean, at least I don't have to pay for the repairs, right? :)
From what I gather, a pipe leading to my hot water tank cracked and was leaking, probably for a while. Today that pipe decided it couldn't take anymore stress and broke. Which lead to zero water actually to getting to my hot water tank and flooding under the house and in the garage. The water is already drying up though, this heat is good for something!
I'll just sweep the sand up once it it dry. Thank goodness nothing we own has damage.
So, moving on.... let's talk about that Hurricane Irene. She's pretty much headed in the direction of bad news. Let's look at the projected path:
This is changing on a regular basis, though. So... I'm not too worried about it at this point. I'm a bit angry that this storm could potentially affect R&R for Michael and I. Other than that, I just want to be prepared. If the projected path still looks bad for us for the next couple days, don't worry. I have a plan and I won't be staying here. :)
After my trip to Walmart today, I'm ready to live without power or clean running water at my house for a while if I have to. I mean, even though I'll be leaving... its good to be ready for anything! I already had most of the necessities, but to add to my collection, I got:
1. A 3-gallon jug for water. I know... its the minimum recommendation, but at least I'm following recommendations!
2. A new Brita filter, because I plan on just filtering my own tap water because there is nothing wrong with it yet and its cheaper. I didn't feel the need to buy bottled water (not that it was an option once I got to that aisle... I guess their new shipment of it was gone with in 30 minutes of being on the shelf.)
3. Junk food. (There's a lot more than you see here because I got a ton of care package supplies for the guys that I could eat if needed to. And yes I do plan on eating a lot of peanut butter and honey sandwiches.)
4. TP. Hurricane or no hurricane, I was down to my last roll.
5. Candles, to add to my collection.
6. A back-up lighter. A the end of the day, I don't want to have to start recalling the movie "Cast Away" to light my candles.
7. A plastic bowl. I plan on hoarding ice in my freezer. I don't really have many perishables in my refrigerator. It just sounded like a good idea.
8. A new flashlight, with extra batteries!
:)
